British Open – Betting
My goodness it’s going to be a busy and argumentative week in FindtheFairways HQ! There’s been a lot of talk about the British Open and who’s going to win it so we’ve got a fair bit of rivalry going on.
There’s an unbelievable amount of betting going here which is getting quite exciting. Between us we’ve spent about £3 now…far too serious for my liking! Chris and Tweagy (The Scots) have got their picks and Chris, Simon and Jon (The English) have theirs…
It’s difficult this betting lark and everyone has their favourite ways of doing things and their favourite betting site. I like betfair.com as you get a free £25 pound bet when you sign-up and you can bet against someone winning too which is always a good idea. Some of the other lads prefer paddypower.com as they’re currently offering 7 places on The British Open and a free £10 bet which is pretty cool I think.
Whatever you choose, this is a difficult one if the weather gets up. Here’s our pics:
The Scots
Chris C – “I’m going with Monty as it’s probably his last chance to show some form in a major and it’s his home course after all. Well worth a bet. I might stick a bet against Harrington too as I think three times in a row is asking too much. Jon’s on a duffer there I reckon.Lol”

Tweagy – “I have been watching the form of Lee Westwood and Paul Casey for a while now and I think they are both coming on to a steady game, I think they both have good links golf in their bags so why not put a couple of quid on them to win? Odds are 35/1 and 37/1 at the moment.
As for my top ten pick Retief Goosen played well last week at the Scottish Open at Loch Lommond so he is worth the gamble with descent odds of a top ten finish.”
The English
Jon – “Harrington’s been playing crap this year but he went and won the Irish Open last week so he’s more than capable. Could it be third in a row? It’s got to be worth a ‘fate’ bet no? Well sod the nay sayers, I’m having £2 on Padriag, just in case.
I also went with 54/1 on Ross Fisher as his form this year has been immense. 699/1 on John Daly cos I like the guy really and 1000/1 on Ryo Ishikawa as he’s worth laying off if he does well.
I’ve also got top ten finish bets on Paul McGinley at 27/1, John Daly at 35/1 and Ishi again at 43/1. All of which are superb prices I reckon. Roll on Thursday!.”

Simon – I’ve got Oliver Wilson at 249/1 for £2 and Ishikawa for £2 at 1000/1 – both to win. I think Wilson played well this year and the odds we’re good enough to have a punt. I can lay both of them off if they have a good first round and guarantee some dosh whoever wins. 1000/1 is a stupid price for such a good player as Ishi, he could easily get into the final 10 if he plays to his potential. That’s if it goes to plan of course…
Chris B – I’m going with Rory McIlroy because McIlroy sounds like a fish. (I get the feeling he doesn’t really care. – Jon).
It’s amazing really that someone who plays so much golf choses his betting on whether his name sounds like a fish or not. Unbelievable!
You just know Chris B is going to win it now as he’s put something so god damn stupid in…think I’m gonna have to put another £2 on Rory just in case…oh no, this is how it all starts.
Good luck everyone with your bets and we hope you enjoy The 2009 Open Championship at Turnberry just as much as we will.
As a show of hands, who do you think will win it from our side – The Scots or The English? Hmmmm
