Tom Watson leads British Open with round of 65!

Turnberry Lighthouse, The Open Championship 2009It’s been an incredible start The British Open but in case you didn’t get chance to catch it, here’s a little update of this morning’s play.

Unbelievably, Tom Watson is the leader in the clubhouse with an awesome round of 65. The legend has shown that even 59, he’s still got it in spades. He didn’t drop a single shot all day and had birdies on 1, 3, 10, 12 & 17. The odds have dropped like a stone with the bookies!

Currently second place is tied by John Senden, Steve Stricker, Camilo Villegas and Stewart Cink who all had rounds of 66 and are at-4 in the clubhouse.

David Howell nearly joined them but dropped a few shots to go to -1 coming into the 18th. An excellent birdie at the last put him back at-2, an excellent start to The Open.

The Westwood, Tiger, Ishikawa group was the hot topic of the day though and easily the group with the most following. Westwood had an awesome start sinking birdies on 1, 2 and 3. He was still -4 at 16 when he dropped his ball into the burn on the right of the green. I know how he feels, that’s where I hit my ball when I played there!

Tiger Woods has had a shocking day ending up on +1 for the day. He just couldn’t get it going today and had so many saves it was unreal. Tiger too hit the burn on 16 and looked despondent with his golf today. A birdie chance at the last went sailing by and left him over par. Tiger headed straight for the range.

On the other side of things, the 17 year old Ryo Ishikawa was going great guns ending up on -2 after 18. The round of applause as the group reached the tee was amazing and the loudest of the day second only to Tom Watson’s rapturous applause.

Garcia made it round in par after an up and down round, as did Justin Leonard and Paul Broadhurst. The boys to follow at the moment though are McIlroy, Poulter and Padraig Harrington.

McIlroy had an excellent start to his Open campaign sticking his second shot to the first hole within 10ft. He just missed the putt. Just making the green on the second, he left himself with a 60/70 foot putt breaking left to right. It looked in all the way and Rory currently sits at -1 on the fifth.

Ian Poulter arrived on the tee with a bright as hell outfit – nothing new there then! The Union Jack tank top didn’t do him any favours though and he stuck his first shot in the bunker on the left. Poulter dropped a shot at the first and currently sits at +1 at the third.

A huge round of applause from the Scottish crowd awaited defending champ Harrington at the first tee. He smashed a lovely tee shot off the first and parred the first and second holes. He currently sits at even par on the third.

There’s lots of others to talk about which I’ll get to later but you just can’t beat this year’s open. It’s a superb day at Turnberry and anyone who misses out on a low score could be paying for it later in the tournament if the wind the perks up!
